Nearly $1-million to upgrade Gainesville schools

GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Schools Grants Administrator Christine Brodsky announced Monday night that the school system had won $829,357 in interest free federal loans to renovate Enota and Fair Street Elementary Schools.

School Superintndent Dr. Steve Ballowe applauded Brodsky for her achievement, saying that Gainesville competed for the grants,pointing out that the money comes at a time when the older schools need an upgrade.

PROGRAMS OF CHOICE

A Gainesville school board member said Monday night when it comes to the new Programs of Choice program, he wants p

arents and students to mean what they say and say what they mean.

This week Gainesville elementary school parents will be surveyed to determine which program of choice they want and David Syfan said school officials need straight answers for accurate planning and staffing.

Parents make their final decision on programs of choice February 28.

SCHOOL CALENDAR

Gainesville School Board members approved the new school calendar for 2003-2004 Monday night.

City students start and finish school the same days as Hall County, August 8 and May 21 with requested holidays off in between,according to Assistant Superintendent Shirley Whitaker.

Whitaker said the calendar contains the required 180 days for students and 190 days for teachers, but still has room for President's Day and Good Friday holidays.
