African-American Church Visits

GHS

Mike Kemp/Ken Martin - We attended New Life Baptist Church near Harrison Square Apartments which Rev. Teasley is the pastor.  We sat with Martrez Milner's mother (UGA football player).  A former student, Jonathan Butts played the drums for their church.  Jonathan was not currently enrolled at that time but did come the next week to enroll in school and participate in Credit Recovery.  We were asked by Rev. Teasley to introduce ourselves, share a little about GHS, and why we were there.

Chris Mance - St.Paul United Methodist Church- Summit Street- Visited on Education Sunday – August 27, 2006

Welcome all the teachers and school personnel to the church and had special altar prayer with us.

This was a very spirit filled worship service.

The congregation and the pastor are very supportive of the school systems in Hall County.

The Congregation and Pastor also stressed the value of a quality education.

I felt a sense of warm welcome- The sermon was delivered by the Associate Pastor who is a Guidance Counselor at East Hall High School, he spoke on the value of an education and how Christians need to be accountable for getting the word out to all generations.

I felt right at home.

Linda Youngblood - St. Paul's Methodist A.A. Church - Summit St.:
1. I was welcomed by everyone without reservation and asked to speak to the congregation. I was surprised by that and how pleased everyone seemed to have me there.
2. I was surprised by how very similar the service was to my own church.
3. The discussion during the service regarding young African American males included the need for the entire community to work together to help them. It made me realize again how it takes all of us to raise the children.

Diane Bryant - I attended St. John Baptist Church at the Sunday evening service on May 14, 2006 for their church dedication. There were several speakers, including Rev. Green, prominent members/pastors of other Gainesville churches, and Brian Daniel's family of Carroll Daniel's Construction.

Many community members, of all ethnicities, were represented. Everyone was made to feel welcome. I spoke to many former students.
