The Gainesville City School System’s Board of Education believes that disruptive students should be reassigned to isolated, individually oriented in-school suspension programs.  The purposes of the in-school suspension program are to:

• Isolate the disruptive students during the school day from the regularly assigned classrooms and activities of the school.
• Continue the student’s progress with classroom assignments.
• Provide individually oriented instruction in essential skills and knowledge areas for which low achievement levels may be contributing to the student’s adjustment problems.

The following disciplinary actions may be imposed for any violation of this Code of Conduct:

• Warning and/or counseling with a teacher, school administrator or counselor
• Loss of privileges (teacher)
• Isolation or time-out (teacher/administrator)
• Temporary removal from a class or activity (teacher)
• Notification of parents/guardians (teacher)
• Detention (teacher and administrative).  Parents must be contacted to provide transportation home at 4:30 p.m. when detention ends.
• Temporary placement in an alternative education program (administrator)
• Short-term suspension (Administrators)
• Academic Saturday School (Administrators)
• Referral to a disciplinary tribunal for long-term suspension or expulsion (Administrators)

Procedures for classroom management of disruptive students:

If a student continuously disrupts instruction and it becomes necessary to remove the student temporarily from the classroom [where the student has not responded well to behavior intervention(s)], the teacher will notify the appropriate administrator or front office that a need for an administrator or the SRO exists.

“Time-out” is assigned only by an administrator and it may last only until the end of the regular class period.  Time-out is completed in the ISS trailor.
