Laptop Initiative Rationale

Formalized education began in ancient Greece with Socrates and Plato lecturing to small groups of students, without the benefit of textbooks. This was simply because no written material was readily available at that time in history. But in 1450 Johannes Guttenburg invented the printing press and formalized education changed dramatically as each student eventually was given textbooks to learn from. The printing press was a true revolution in education. 550 years later, computers are no less so. We don't see it because we are right in the middle of it, just as people in the 15th century didn't see it then, but computers may offer an even greater revolution than the printing press. With that in mind, Gainesville City Schools does not want to simply follow in the footsteps of others, we want to be innovators and leaders. At some point, and it won't be too far in the future, every student will have a laptop that they use every day as a classroom learning tool, just as students now have textbooks. At Gainesville City Schools, the future is now and "someday" is today!
