What can a Parent do?
  • Read to your child and schedule regular trips to the library if possible.
  • Take family trips to interesting places.
  • Monitor TV viewing.
  • Provide opportunities for your child to participate in music, art, sports, etc., where available.
  • Allow your child to fail or at least be frustrated.  Many things come easy to gifted children and without the opportunity to struggle, gifted children can become lazy or complacent.
  • LOVE your child for him/her self—not for his/her brain.  Remember that gifted children are often gifted in only one area, and may even struggle in some areas.
  • Listen to your gifted child. Be sensitive to your child’s message in his words.
  • Remember that gifted children don’t have to be academically challenged every waking minute.
  • Discipline and developing a good work ethic is necessary.  HELP THEM WITH THEIR STUDY SKILLS!
  • Be aware of your child’s fears and anxieties.
  • Use incentives, but steer away from money.
  • Remember, the fine line between encouraging and pushing may make the difference between a happy and productive child and an unfulfilled, underachieving child.
