Gainesville City School System to Opt Out of HB 581

Gainesville, GA Friday, January 3, 2025 – Gainesville City School System announces its intent to opt out of House Bill 581, a statewide property tax reform bill passed by the Georgia General Assembly. This decision was made after careful consideration of the potential impacts of a statewide bill and a local bill (HB 1271).

While HB 581 aims to provide property tax relief, it also creates a duplicate reassessment cap competing with a new local legislation passed by the voters in November. By opting out, Gainesville City School System seeks to support HB 1271 and the local 3% reassessment cap on homestead properties.
